Well, obviously not all of the above are “missing ships.” It is, in fact, hard to discern why the Coast Guard retained these vessel names on file. They insist at 7th district HQ that this is all the vessels they have kept on file for the last 2 years, though even they don’t clarify why. While my FOIA request was for missing vessels, the closest they could come was “overdue” and presented me with this list. However, it is also obvious not all of the vessels above are overdue vessels. In a couple of instances it clarifies that the ODU vessel was found, but for the other ODU vessels it says nothing. A short search time (date opened/date closed) doesn’t help, as the search for a missing plane or boat can be very short. This is usually because the Coast Guard doesn’t really have much info on it. It is merely listed as unreported or overdue between far flung destinations. Where can one search?

Also, the list has a couple of airplanes mentioned. Cross checking with NTSB reveals these to be non existent cases. Therefore, they are not missing planes. A few of the vessels above also carry the notation that lives were saved or lost, a sure indication it was not a vessel that disappeared (No Plan; a Hobie Cat; Camelot; Venus Butterfly; Sea Ya; Bravo; Mumutu; and a few unnamed small craft). But for most of them only a string of zeros comes after the above notations, meaning the Coast Guard didn’t know how many were on board, never found it, and the case is closed in limbo.

Potentially insignificant cases might be on the list, while startling ones are omitted. For Alyson Selene there is no clarification that this was the derelict from which a Coast Guard Petty Officer vanished, and although the Tropic Bird turned up mysteriously deserted off the Windwards in June 2000, it does not appear on the list at all. Judging by the case numbers, many cases were never retained, indicating those listed should some significance, and those classified “unreported” or “OVERDUE” may indeed be cases in which a satisfactory conclusion was not found, although again this may not mean a permanently missing vessel, as the operators might simply never have reported and could be sailing off around the world. It can, however, in the majority of cases mean the vessel is gone.

At the very least, the reader should understand why it is hard to definitely determine a vessel is missing. It actually takes a long time. The vessel could arrive port months later and the crew never have been aware they were searched for. The Coast Guard might not even hear about it.

For 2001 a similar scenario is encountered. Of those listed above, only a fraction have annotations saying it was located or that a person’s life was lost. Tropic Bird is surprisingly listed here instead of in 2000. They list 1 life as having been lost, their deduction that its operator, Tom Olchefske, must have perished. ODC Caribe is listed as having survivors, so are some missing skiffs and a few unnamed pleasure craft. Dream Seeker must have been found, for it records that 1 life was saved and 45,000.00 property (the boat) was saved also. The same for Sea Hunder. This, however, is the exception.

One can tell that more than one clerk entered in the results just by how different annotations are made. But one thing remains consistent: for most of the boats listed ODU or OVERDUE, there is no annotation at all. It does not seem possible all vanished, though many must have. Weather is not mentioned. Therefore it is hard to determine what could have played a hand. Certainly piracy was a factor. But considering how many vessels travel the area unannounced, this list represents only a fraction of potentially missing boats. How many vanished silently, the Coast Guard unaware they were even out there?

The following list is from the 7th Coast Guard District, Miami. This district is responsible for most of the Bermuda Triangle. My FOIA request wasn’t for missing vessels this time. It was for overdue. This finally turned up a response. This list represents the vessels they have kept on file for the last 2 fiscal years. Although the Coast Guard has insisted to me for 12 years that nobody keeps a listing of missing boats, none bothered to clarify that the more appropriate or “official” designation “overdue” might be more apt.

The following list must be taken with a certain amount of caution. One would assume, however, that most retained on the list are for more than routine calls. This may not be the case. Furthermore, one should also assume that many potentially interesting cases are not retained. The actual number of “missing” or, more officially put, “overdue” vessels will always remain unknown, just as the Coast Guard often admits.

Usually one would follow up such a list with Search & Rescue reports. I have attempted to do so, which is routine. However, after I received this list (perhaps by accident), all my Freedom of Information Act Requests have been ignored. Not denied, which is required by law, but all written requests have simply been ignored. There has been no answer forthcoming whatsoever, although this is required by law. I doubt that all my requests have been lost by the Post Office.

Posted April 7, 2003. The Coast Guard has acknowledged one request, of last November 13, and has sent Search & Rescue cases. Those cases that are being updated with concrete information will have their case disposition annotated in red.
